How air suspension systems work

Function

Compared to passive suspensions, an air suspension offers more comfort, optimized driving characteristics and the option of height adjustment.

The air bags on the suspension struts are filled with the desired pressure as required via a compressed air system. The system is controlled via a central control unit. Various sensors provide the necessary data such as speed, surface and load.

To control the vehicle height, level control valves regulate the pressure in the springs and ensure that the vehicle height remains constant regardless of the load.

Variants

2-corner system: air suspension only on the rear axle (e.g. to compensate for heavy loads or trailer loads on vans or estate cars)

4-corner system: air suspension on the front and rear axle (all-round suspension for the entire vehicle)

Pros & Cons

Air suspension systems are more comfortable and safer than conventional steel suspension systems and can be used regardless of the type of drive.

Vehicles that rest optimally on the road at all times offer better driving stability and therefore increased driving safety and dynamics on any surface. In addition, getting in and out of the vehicle can be made more comfortable for the occupants by raising the vehicle.

As these systems are more complex than conventional suspension systems, they are only used from the upper mid-range upwards for cost reasons.
